Accident / Incident Procedures

At all club training sessions or competitions, there must be a named safety representative (who may be the person in charge of the session), who must be aware of the facilities NOP and EAP, and must also be aware of the location of the venues' safety equipment, emergency telephone, first aid equipment, fire exits, 'panic buttons' and the club's accident / incident record log. That person will also have the emergency contact details for each swimmer in the squad.

In the event of an accident or incident, the named person will assume responsibility for any emergency procedures that need to be carried out in accordance with the EAP of the Leisure Centre.

At the following training venues:

  • Cheam Leisure Centre
  • Morden Leisure Centre
  • Banstead Sports Centre
  • Legal & General Sports Centre

The Facility Provider is responsible for certain procedures.

The person in charge of the session will therefore:

Alert the lifeguard and / or Leisure Centre staff who will:

  • Take charge of the incident
  • Administer First Aid as necessary
  • Call the Emergency Services if necessary

The club's named safety representative will:

  • Raise the Alarm
  • Notify the event organisers (if appropriate)
  • Ensure the rest of the group is properly supervised
  • Contact the injured person's parent or carer (See whereabouts Emergency Contact Information)
  • Complete the club's accident / incident record log
  • Inform the Club Committee of the incident
  • Inform the club's insurer if necessary
Please note it is particularly important NOT to move someone with major injuries; wait for specialised help.

At the following training venues:

  • Downsend School
  • Old Palace School

During swimming training and programmed lessons, there must be at least two adults in attendance, one of whom should hold a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, the other should hold the 'Rescue Test for Teachers and Coaches off Swimming'. If there is no one on the poolside with such a qualification, then no swimming is to take place.

The person in charge of the session will:

  • Have a recognised lifeguarding / life-saving qualification as stipulated in the School's Normal Operating Procedures (NOP).

In the event of an emergency, the person in charge will:

  • Raise the Alarm
  • Call the Emergency Services if necessary
  • Administer First Aid as necessary (Qualified staff only)
  • Ensure the rest of the group is properly supervised
  • Contact the injured person's parent or carer (See whereabouts Emergency Contact Information)
  • Complete the club's accident / incident record log
  • Complete a written report to be sent to the letting officer of the school
  • Inform the Club Committee of the incident
  • Inform the club's insurer if necessary

Again, please note it is particularly important NOT to move someone with major injuries; wait for specialised help.

Emergency Contact Information

All swimmers and players joining the club are asked to provide Emergency Contact Details to ensure that all poolside personnel have access to emergency contact information for all members in their care.

This information is collated by the Club's Membership Secretary and is made available to all teachers and coaches on the basis that it is only to be used in the event of an emergency. Regular updates are provided as necessary.

In addition, the Club Membership Secretary is present at the Cheam Leisure Centre on Monday and Wednesday evenings; and at Morden Leisure Centre on Thursday evenings.

A copy of the Emergency Contact Information database (in MS Excel Format) is also held in a password protected folder on the club website. This is kept updated.
