Sutton & Cheam Swimming Club welcomes girls and boys of all ages

Sutton & Cheam Swimming Club is a friendly, affordable, competitive club catering for girls and boys aged 4+ from beginners to competitive swimmers. The club provides training for swimmers of all abilities to County and National Standards. The emphasis is on competition and the club participates in friendly and league galas throughout the year.

All our coaches are ASA qualified and all the club's activities are covered under the ASA Insurance Scheme.

Teaching Programme

Sutton and Cheam Swimming Club's teaching programme and club structure follows the ASA's 'National Plan for Teaching Swimming' (NPTS) 10 Stage "FUNdamentals", which is designed to provide a structured progression from 'Learn to Swim' through skill and fitness development, to competition development. Stages 1 to 7 take the swimmer from the basic skills; through gradual skill development in all strokes, to pre-competition.

Swimmers progress through the various levels as they become more proficient. Progression is based on the attainment of specific skills relating to the aims of each group.

Boys and Girls who can already swim, can usually be fast-tracked into later stages of the programme (see 'How to Join').

Demand for places is high and parents wishing to place younger children on our waiting list are encouraged to do so. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis as they become available.

Stages 1 to 4 of the NPTS programme relate to our Width Groups W1 to W4. The coach of each group will continually assess the swimmers' progress and will move them on to the next group when the time is right, following consultation with the parents.

Widths 1 (Stage 1, NPTS) concentrates on developing basic safety awareness and confidence; and basic movement skills with small class sizes. Swimmers may use buoyancy aids.
Swimmer:coach ratio not to exceed 12:1

Widths 2 (Stage 2, NPTS) begins to develop safe entries to the water, including jumping in, basic floating, travelling on front and back up to a distance of 5 metres. Swimmers again may continue to use buoyancy aids.
Swimmer:coach ratio not to exceed 12:1

Widths 3 (Stage 3, NPTS) - includes submersion, travelling up to 10 metres on the front and back, and water safety. At this stage, the Swimmer will be assessed without the use of aids or support.
Swimmer:coach ratio not to exceed 12:1

Widths 4 (Stage 4 NPTS) increases the range of skills, refines kicking technique for all strokes, and swimming 10 metres to a given standard as directed by the ASA.
Swimmer:coach ratio not to exceed 12:1

Stages 5 to 7 of the NPTS programme relate to our Development Groups D3 to D1. Again, the coach of each group will continually assess the swimmers' progress and will move them on to the next group when the time is right, following consultation with the parents.

Development 3 (Stage 5, NPTS) begins the transition to lengths training and further developing 'watermanship' through sculling and treading water skills as well as performing all strokes for a distance of 10 metres or more to standard given by the ASA within the NPTS resources.
Swimmer:coach ratio not to exceed 20:1

Development 2 (Stage 6, NPTS) - further develops swimming skills including coordinated breathing across all strokes plus swimming a distance of 25 metres and beginning to have an understanding of preparation for exercise.
Swimmer:coach ratio not to exceed 20:1

Development 1 (Stage 7, NPTS) - Continues to build on quality stroke technique up to 100 metres and begins training over multiple lengths on all strokes as a basis for Pre-competition.
Swimmer:coach ratio not to exceed 20:1

Once the Swimmer has developed the core range of skills required to be confident, competent and safe in the water through stages 1 - 7; stages 8, 9 and 10 of the NPTS are discipline specific and the swimmer may then have the choice to take part in the different aquatic disciplines, Competitive Swimming and Mini-polo

Competitive Swimming itself has two streams, one (Junior, Top Squads) designed to fast track the more able swimmers with the potential to compete at County, Regional and National levels; the other (County, Club Squads) aimed at those swimmers who may wish to compete at a lower level, or who do not wish to play water polo.

Junior Squad (Coach: Helen Andrews)

Further emphasis is put on training for competition with the emphasis on developing technique, endurance and speed. This phase also places emphasis on racing starts and turns and introduces our young swimmers to the rules of competition. This stage also usually gives swimmers their first taste of competition at club and 'friendly' galas with the emphasis on enjoyment and improvement.

As a swimmer ascends the squad structure, the level of commitment expected to training and competition increases. In order to join the next squad above, swimmers will be expected to demonstrate the required level of commitment and attendance during a trial period.

County and Club squad swimmers are still able to compete and the club enters 'B' and 'C' galas throughout the year to give them a taste of competition.

The structure is very flexible and swimmers are able to move between squads at any stage. In this way, we are able to catch the 'late developers'.
