Sutton and Cheam Swimming Club's teaching programme and club structure follows the ASA's 'National Plan for Teaching Swimming' (NPTS) 10 Stage "FUNdamentals", which is designed to provide a structured progression from 'Learn to Swim' through skill and fitness development, to competition development. Stages 1 to 7 take the swimmer from the basic skills; through gradual skill development in all strokes, to pre-competition. Swimmers progress through the various levels as they become more proficient. Progression is based on the attainment of specific skills relating to the aims of each group. Boys and Girls who can already swim, can usually be fast-tracked into later stages of the programme (see 'How to Join'). Demand for places is high and parents wishing to place younger children on our waiting list are encouraged to do so. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis as they become available. Stages 1 to 4 of the NPTS programme relate to our Width
Groups W1 to W4. The coach of each group will continually assess
the swimmers' progress and will move them on to the next group when
the time is right, following consultation with the parents. |

Widths 1 (Stage 1, NPTS) concentrates on developing basic
safety awareness and confidence; and basic movement skills with
small class sizes. Swimmers may use buoyancy aids. Widths 3 (Stage 3, NPTS) - includes submersion, travelling
up to 10 metres on the front and back, and water safety. At this
stage, the Swimmer will be assessed without the use of aids or support. Widths 4 (Stage 4 NPTS) increases the range of skills, refines
kicking technique for all strokes, and swimming 10 metres to a given
standard as directed by the ASA. |

Development 3 (Stage 5, NPTS) begins the transition to lengths
training and further developing 'watermanship' through sculling
and treading water skills as well as performing all strokes for
a distance of 10 metres or more to standard given by the ASA within
the NPTS resources. Development 2 (Stage 6, NPTS) - further develops swimming
skills including coordinated breathing across all strokes plus swimming
a distance of 25 metres and beginning to have an understanding of
preparation for exercise. Development 1 (Stage 7, NPTS) - Continues to build on quality
stroke technique up to 100 metres and begins training over multiple
lengths on all strokes as a basis for Pre-competition. |

| Competitive Swimming itself has two streams, one (Junior, Top Squads) designed to fast track the more able swimmers with the potential to compete at County, Regional and National levels; the other (County, Club Squads) aimed at those swimmers who may wish to compete at a lower level, or who do not wish to play water polo. | |
|
As a swimmer ascends the squad structure, the level of commitment expected to training and competition increases. In order to join the next squad above, swimmers will be expected to demonstrate the required level of commitment and attendance during a trial period. Swimmer:coach ratio not to exceed 30:1 Junior Squad Criteria for entry
Concentration is on technique rather than speed:
Top Squad (Coach: Jim Walker) Concentrates further on skill, fitness and speed development. Land
training is introduced together with additional pool time. Top Squad Criteria for entry

County & Club Squads (Coach: Ian Rooke) The County and Club squads continue with a full programme again designed to develop technique, endurance and speed but to a less intensive level than the Junior Squad above. County and Club squad swimmers are still able to compete and the club enters 'B' and 'C' galas throughout the year to give them a taste of competition. The structure is very flexible and swimmers are able to move between squads at any stage. In this way, we are able to catch the 'late developers'. Swimmer:coach ratio not to exceed 20:1 County Squad Caters for those younger swimmers reaching the top of D1 who are either not interested in moving to top quality competition swimming; or who are not prepared to commit to the minimum session requirements of the junior squad. It should be noted that some of the Club Squad Swimmers continue to compete for the club in League Galas and in other competitions. Club Squad Criteria for entry

Water Polo Swim Training Swimming ability and endurance are pre-requisites for water polo
and swim lanes are reserved during County and Club Squad sessions
for our junior and senior water polo players, many of whom continue
to represent the club in major swimming competitions when water
polo fixtures allow it. |
